Welcome to Baarle-Nassau & Baarle-Hertog, one of the strangest places in Europe where Belgium and the Netherlands are tangled together like a giant geographical puzzle.
And this isnt simply a town sitting on a border.
There are 30 separate pieces of Belgian and Dutch territory woven together. Twenty-two Belgian enclaves belong to Baarle-Hertog, surrounded by Dutch territory, while eight Dutch enclaves belong to Baarle-Nassau including seven tiny Dutch pieces hidden inside Belgian enclaves!
And the most surprising part The border doesnt stop at the street
Two countries = two sets of laws
Different Belgian and Dutch rules can apply depending on which side of the border youre standing on.
The border runs straight through houses, shops, restaurants and gardens.
In some buildings, the front door determines which country the address belongs to.
Baarle has its own unusual shopping culture: shops in both Baarle-Hertog and Baarle-Nassau can open on Sundays, and Sunday shopping is a normal part of life here.
The legal drinking age for alcohol in the Netherlands is 18, while Belgian rules are different for certain drinks and ages.
Even more fascinating: the border can determine which municipality and therefore which countrys authorities deal with a property or address.

So how did two countries end up with such a tangled border
It goes back hundreds of years, to medieval land agreements between the Lords of Breda and the Dukes of Brabant. Somehow, this complicated territorial puzzle survived into the modern world.
Today, two countries, two municipalities, two governments and one community exist in this tiny corner of Europe.
Imagine your front door is in Belgium, but your backyard is in the Netherlands! You are waking up, walking to the caf and casually crossing an international border on the way.

Midwest friends brought their parents to Hawaii. Just in time for horrible humidity.
The father retired, but still had his hobby collecting scrap metal. He did not think the weather was any better here than in Ohio.
All the coolest things to do were canceled due to large waves (no sunset catamaran) and hikes to spectacular views were limited as well.
Unless you enjoy asian food, variety is limited compared to places with cheap startups costs and farm access.
